Mariachi Plaza

la-me-mariachi-plaza-20141201

Since the 1930s, mariachi musicians have gathered in hopes of being hired by visitors who are looking for a full band, trio or solo singer. The plaza resembles Mexico’s famed Plaza Garibaldi in both form and function and draws people form all over Los Angeles. This plaza is also an historic gateway to the neighborhood.

Day or night, one can find many musicians waiting around the plaza and hotel across the street to be hired for work. Local leaders hope to promote the plaza and for it to remain a sanctuary for musicians. There is a small kiosk located in the plaza, similar to those found in Mexico, donated by the Mexican State of Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi music.

WESTLAKE HOMES FOR SALE | NEW LISTINGS | UNLISTED

1280px-Macarthur_Park

Westlake is surrounded by some of the best neighborhoods in Los Angeles.  Its amazing location is one of the best kept secrets in Los Angeles.  Its access to the best thoroughfares in Southern California (CA 101, 10 and 110) lets its residents get just about anywhere, fast.

Westlake is flanked by the incredibly hip Silver Lake to the north, Echo Park to the northeast and east, Downtown to the southeast, Pico-Union to the south and southwest and Koreatown to the west.

Downtown Los Angeles is close enough to walk or ride a bike.  Within minutes the Downtown Los Angeles Library, Staples Center, and the Los Angeles Music Center can be enjoyed without it being a “special event”, these gems are a daily sight to the residents of Westlake.

homes-under-500k-cp-ad-rsi-j

To the west are some of the most iconic destinations and they are within minutes of travel.  The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest and finest collection of art west of the Mississippi is convenient enough to make the most of a season pass.

Historically Westlake has been a over-looked extension of Downtown Los Angeles.  It’s homes are nearly as old as the city itself, with neighborhoods that have beautiful architectural styles, and have the rare opportunity to be brought up to date.

-

Most of the greater area in and around Los Angeles has been redeveloped, refurbished and often gentrified.  To come across a neighborhood that is beginning to gain interest in such a prime location is rare, and unlikely to be seen many times in the future.  Westlake is a perfect area to shop for a new home for first time buyers who don’t want to commute from a suburb and make the most of what Los Angeles has to offer.

The area Westlake that is closer to the downtown border are many luxury and medium condominiums.

-

In past years the condominium and loft market in Downtown Los Angeles, both buyer’s interest and prices has skyrocketed.  Many adjacent areas are beginning to feel the impact of the high demand to live in the area.  Westlake has many great condominiums to chose from that can give a Los Angelino a downtown residence and a budget left over to live the lifestyle.

MacArthur Park (formerly Westlake Park) is a park in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, named after General Douglas MacArthur and a designated City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument.

Beginning in 2002 the Los Angeles Police Department and business and community leaders led a revitalization effort that has led to the installation of surveillance cameras, the opening of a recreation center, increased business, early-morning drink vendors, a new Metro station, the return of the the fountain, and large community festivals attracting thousands. In 2005 the park was celebrated for having the highest reduction of crime statistics per resident in the United States.

SILVER LAKE HOMES FOR SALE  |  FOR LEASE  |  NEW LISTINGS

Silver-Lake-Reservoir-2008-03-02-STF_2_edited-1

Since the 1990s, Silver Lake has become the center of the alternative and indie rock scene in Los Angeles.  Since the indie rock music scene is particularly prominent in this neighborhood, Silver Lake, known as one of “the city’s hippest neighborhoods”,  is sometimes referred to as the “Williamsburg (NY) of the West”.

In the community of Silver Lake lies the namesake reservoir composed of two basins, within the grounds of the reservoir are several popular recreational facilities — the Silver Lake Recreation Center, which includes an adjacent city park; the Silver Lake Walking Path, which circumnavigates the reservoirs (2.25 miles); and the Silver Lake Meadow, modeled after N.Y.C.’s Central Park Sheep Meadow.

There is certainly nothing cookie-cutter about Silver Lake, CA — it’s as diverse as the people living in it. Silver Lake is home to many artists, writers and musicians, like Beck and the late Elliot Smith, just to name a few.

homes-under-500k-cp-ad-rsi-j

Thanks to its neighborhood feel, Silver Lake is the perfect area for young people looking for an eclectic spot, and diverse families seeking out good schools and a community vibe.

Silver Lake is continually growing — with an ever-increasing mix of stylish boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and everything in-between. But it’s managed to hold on to its unique charm.

Silver Lake is flanked on the northeast by Atwater Village and Elysian Valley, on the southeast by Echo Park, on the southwest by Westlake, on the west by East Hollywood and on the northwest by Los Feliz.

The Wilshire strip attracts and serves automobile traffic as well as pedestrian shoppers. When initially developed, major retailers such as Desmond’s, Silverwood’s, May Co., Coulter’s, Mullen & Bluett, Myer Siegel, and Seibu spread down Wilshire Boulevard from Fairfax to La Brea. The architecture of the buildings has larger, bolder, simpler signage and longer buildings in a larger scale.  The Miracle Mile building forms are driven by the stylistic language of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne.

Washington, D.C. 235

The 1939 Streamline Moderne May Company Building marks the western border of the Miracle Mile and “Museum Row”.

The Miracle Mile became one of Los Angeles’s most desirable areas. Acclaimed as “America’s Champs-Élysées,” this stretch of Wilshire near the La Brea Tar Pits was named “Miracle Mile” for its improbable rise to prominence. Although the preponderance of shopping malls and the development in the 1960s of financial and business districts in downtown and Century City lessened the Miracle Mile’s importance as a retail and business center, the area has retained its vitality thanks to the addition of several museums and commercial high-rises.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Vista Theatre opened on October 16, 1923, as a single-screen theater. In addition to screening films, the theater also showed vaudeville acts on stage.

It is one of the remaining historic structures from the 1920s, when Hollywood was first built up and began attracting residents to its new suburban homes from areas near downtown Los Angeles and East Los Angeles, at the time middle and wealthy class sections of Los Angeles.

In a manner reminiscent of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, The Vista is a local landmark. It has been renovated to play new release movies, and retains its historic architecture.

East Hollywood and its adjacent communities is where you go to experience the “real” not reel Los Angeles.  It’s roots are deep and reach into many cultures.  This is where you will truly discover Hollywood.
